Shoestring Shopper: April Showers

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I love the rain. Seriously, rainy weather brings a smile to my face because it seems so playful and clean. The only thing that can dampen my spirits on a rainy day is getting soaked, especially wet feet. Nothing can bring you down like wet feet, but now that rain boots have been in vogue, we can certainly eliminate them.

Like every good Boy Scout knows, the trick to enjoying the weather is to be prepared. This month the Shoestring Shopper brings you a variety of rain gear options for different kinds of rainy days. The best part is that each ensemble is available online and costs less than 100$ USD, so there is really no excuse not to look good enjoying the rain.

PLAYING IN THE RAIN

Play in the Rain

Does rain bring out your inner child? Then you will need an outfit suitable for puddle jumping. These super fun rain boots look fabulous with just about anything, but pair them with bright leggings, a comfy tee and clean sporty jacket and you will be ready to spring into action. Add a pair of hip shades and striped umbrella to keep the entire look youthful.

Chooka Anchor Rain Boots $39.99 – Piperlime
White Sporty Jacket $22.80 – Forever 21
Cloudy Tee $17.50 – American Eagle
Bright Blue Leggings $4.50 – Forever 21

WALKING IN SUN SHOWERS

SUN SHOWERS

Not all rain days are dark and cold; in fact some spring showers are quite lovely. So the next time you find yourself in an afternoon sun shower, unexpectedly pair stylish rain boots with a flirty summer dress. Add a shiny patent leather belt to express your inner sunshine and your chic sunglasses to filter the outer sunshine. Try a transparent umbrella to let the warm sunbeams through.

Gradient Blue Rain Boots $20.00 – Wal-Mart
Blue Check Sun Dress $22.80 – Forever 21
Yellow Patent Leather Belt $29.99 – J Crew
Oversized Retro Sunglasses $12.99 – Urban Outfitters
Transparent Rain Drop Umbrella $13.59 - Target

DAILY GRIND IN STORMY WEATHER

THE DAILY GRIND

Your to-do list is growing and it can’t wait until the clouds part? Throw on your go-to comfy jeans and tuck them into some adorable polka-dot rain boots. Top off the look with a bright spring jacket and a printed scarf that expresses your personal style. But remember; don’t leave the house without a pretty umbrella to shield you from the rain and sunny tote bag for added convenience throughout your errands.

Yellow Spring Jacket $19.99 – Old Navy
Polka Dot Rain Boots $17.99 – Old Navy
Sun Tote Bag $12.50 – American Eagle
Yellow Umbrella $39.50 – J Crew

Printed Scarf $8.80 - Forever 21

What do you love about a rainy day?

Spring Cleaning

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Most of us only have a few precious moments to get ready in the morning, so don’t waste them trying to find things in your giant mess. Clear the clutter and save those moments to ponder whether the turquoise necklace or the onyx strand will work better with your outfit.

Most of us have developed our own effective ways to get the job done, but if you need a little help Mahalo offers a thorough guide, Style Phyle offers a simplified box method and Threadbanger’s Meg offers fun closet organization ideas on Décor it Yourself.

Although rules can be helpful, remember that there are exceptions to every rule. No matter how tattered your favorite cozy pieces become, hang on to them if you still love them. It takes a long time to wear a great hole in a pair of jeans that have been molded perfectly to every nook of your body.

If something looks amazing on you, do not let it go. Regardless of fashion trends, if a dress makes you look like a million bucks, what more could you ask from your wardrobe? If the piece is so far out of style that you aren’t comfortable wearing it, be sure to store it. Fashion is constantly re-cycling itself and just when you throw it out, it’s back in Vogue. If shoulder pads can make a comeback, I am betting anything can

Now, what do you do with the closet discards? You can:

RECYCLE

If you love the fabric, pattern, cut, buttons, etc on something then hang on to it for a while, you may be able to use it in a Recycled Style Project, but definitely get it out of your closet and into your crafting or sewing spaces.

SELL

Selling your goods is a great way to pad your spring shopping budget. Fashion items can be sold online on Craigslist and E-bay or you can always host a good old fashioned garage sale.

TRADE

Host a clothing swap party. After all your friends have completed their spring cleaning invite them and their clothing to a party where you can trade for new-to-you items that won’t break the bank. Getcrafty.com offers a great Naked Lady Party guide to help you plan your party. Don’t have the space or the right circle of friends for such an event check your local media outlets to find larger parties being organized in your area or join the Swap Party Online.

DECORATE

Some discarded clothing might work really well for interesting home décor. I used my un-wearable Betsey Johnson strappy heels as decorative eye candy for my book shelf. Try reincarnating snuggly sweaters into pillows and frame vintage t-shirts to give your walls some interest. Since fashion is art the ideas are endless.

DONATE

At the end of the day the best thing you can do is donate your gently used goods to those in need. Find local shelters and organizations that accept clothing donations and get a tax receipt as well as good karma. Dress Your Best in Toronto helps people from marginalized communities by preparing them for the workplace. New York City’s Housing Works Thrift Shops work to end the crisis of AIDS and homelessness. Find a cause you would like to support and and put your old goods to some good work.

Now on to the rest of the house….

Fashion Dare: Prints Mixology

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Mix it up this spring by refusing to play it safe. Don’t pair your prints with boring solids, pair them with wild patterns. Keeping the prints or patterns in the same color hue and/or pairing a smaller print with a larger print will help you start your transition into mixing prints successfully and making dramatic wardrobe statements.

Fashion is nothing without a little risk, so try a few of your favorite standout prints and patterns together. Sometimes the best combinations are those that we would normally never think to mix. Try two different floral prints together or pair it with tweed. The mathematician in you might shine brighter if you explore more geometric shapes like polkadots and houdstooth. If you are a child of the 90’s you might want to try some plaids and stripes. This is a look you will have to own, so find the right mix for your personal style, I DARE YOU.

As Ani Di Franco once said, “I’ve got spots, I’ve got stripes, too”…
