Fashion Dare: Barbie Pink

In honor of the legendary plastic icon’s 50th year, I dare you to don a little (or even a lot) of her signature hue. Yes, I am talking about hot (oh so very hot) pink.

Hot pink exudes the same kind of sexy confidence as the color’s big sister, fire engine red, but in a flirtier, girlier way. Hot pink manages to garner attention while remaining approachable and fun, so it is no surprise that Hollywood’s starlets often turn heads while wearing outfits worthy of a life-sized doll.

Despite the pop culture princess’ questionable impact on teen girls’ body-confidence, she managed to be a powerfully positive influence in my childhood (and until I was much older than I should admit to here). Barbie’s only request of me was to be infinitely imaginative and visually artistic. In turn, she taught me about being creative with couture and about the psychology of wardrobe choices and how they display one’s inner personality even without saying a word (out loud anyways).

So I am giving the best-selling doll in history her well-deserved props this month. Whether you decide to give Ol’ Babs a subtle nod with a touch of hot pink or drape yourself head-to-toe in a full homage, is up to you, but remember, I dare you.

Pink - that fascinating colour that looks good on both sexes and so many skin tones - it should never be reserved for “little girls” and it is not a wimpy colour. I add on to this dare and I dare MEN to wear pink this month.
